CR Paddlers Activities

This past year we didn’t get out as often as usual due to a particularly wet summer. However, usually we enjoy many evening paddles, weekend day trips and a longer trip or two. Check out our picture gallery and trip blog to see pictures of some of the trips we have enjoyed in the past.
Our group is very safety conscious. In fact, we do not allow any new members to join in our paddles unless they are experienced paddlers or have at least taken a beginners course through the local kayak shop. Being able to perform a self rescue is mandatory as our local waters can be very treacherous and the conditions can change in an instant. A number of rescue skills practice sessions are held every year either in the Campbell River estuary or at a nearby lake. Members are encouraged to practice their self rescue skills every year. During the winter a few of us work at rolling and paddling strokes in the pool every Tuesday. A small group of members is working on paddling skills in the currents of Surge Narrows. Some of our members are starting to use Dry suits, which is changing our paddling. There is also a keen interest in some storm paddling this winter. Two of our members have taken the Level 2 Skills course this spring.
Also last winter a series of navigation classes took place. One of our members has a great deal of knowledge and is always willing to share with the rest of us. We are building a library of instructional DVDs that members can use to improve their skills. We have also purchased some safety equipment that is available for member use.
Constructing kayaks and crafting paddles are also an interest in the club.
