Saturday:
Brent showed us some stryofoam blocks near the float planes, so Emily & I picked up a few when we returned from our waterfront paddle. After Brent returned from his paddle to Quadra Is, he & I decided to collect a few more. We made a couple of trips with our kayaks, and assembled a good sized pile. We debated leaving the blocks for the city to pick up, but the forecast called for strong winds. Luckily, Ted came to the rescue on very short notice, and drove down with his trailer. After we filled (and tarped) the trailer, the rest went into my pickup truck.
I sent an email Saturday night asking for assistance on Sunday.
Sunday:
I loaded my canoe for Sunday ... it hasn't been in the water much the last few years. Tom's boat was in the shop, so I was pleased to invite him to man the stern of my canoe ... freeing me to jump in & out of the bow. I wore rubber boots to protect my drysuit from nails & rocks. We located the wayward dock that was the source of the styrofoam ... a few whacks with a wrecking bar and we were able to remove the remaining foam. Meanwhile ... Brent collected several bags of foam from one of the side channels; Ted went with Brent and filled the front half of his legacy double; Fred & Arlene patrolled the shore of the main bay and loaded up their canoe. Brent, Tom & I made a last circuit of the southern edge; then it was back to the parking lot to load up Ted's trailer. Leftovers went in Tom's truck.
Huge thanks are due to Brent for initiating the cleanup.
I'd also like to thank Ted for bringing his trailer, Tom for piloting my canoe, Fred & Arlene for coming out with their canoe, and Paul & Shaun for showing us how to tow a large block.
